Video Transcript: Peritoneal Mesothelioma Surgery - Woman Describes First Surgery

The first surgery was done at the NIH in Baltimore.  It took 12 hours for the debulking. I lost 12 inches of intestines, and I lost my cervix, and all my female organs are gone. All that was covered with disease, so they had to remove those.

Well the first surgery was really.... to me was supposed to be pretty cut and dry. Seven days, 10 days, and you go home. Well, not for me. I had all kinds of complications going in. Because I had so many drainings and the ultrasound, guided paracentesis, that I was lacking albumen and potassium in my system.  Legs were big, stomach was big, and I just looked like a big whale walking around; trying not to hurt. Couldn’t sleep; couldn’t stand; couldn’t sit; couldn’t do anything. That went on for a whole week. After the week, they said they were going to move forward because we’ve got your albumin levels pretty far up, and we feel comfortable doing the surgery.
