Video Transcript: Peritoneal Mesothelioma Patient on Her Mesothelioma Diagnosis Process

I found out I had mesothelioma on March 17th of 2004. I couldn’t breathe, and it was very hard for me to get a full breath, and I got scared. I thought I was having a heart attack. So I took myself to the hospital, and when they did the x-rays, they did a CT scan as well, and found that I had a very big large dark area in my abdomen.... and they wanted to do further testing to find out what it was.

They weren’t sure.  They thought it was... they knew it was a lump. It was a big structure; it was a mass, and it was restricting my intestines.... and that is why every time I ate, my stomach blew up. And they said that most of the time when you are making fluid at that enormous amounts then it was mesothelioma. They wanted to do an exploratory surgery and get a biopsy in order to confirm their beliefs. I had to have an ultrasound--guided peracentesis--in order to drain the fluid from my abdomen so they could get a better picture of what was down there. So, they did that first.  And then I went back to have another x-ray and another CT scan. And they also drew blood to do blood workup to make sure that it was mesothelioma. Because they said it could be that or I could have Crohn’s disease. So, they wanted to narrow it down and also eliminate some of the other causes that they were looking for. We found out later that day that it was mesothelioma.
