Video Transcript: Mesothelioma Surgery Recovery - Difficult Recovery to First Mesothelioma Surgery
After that happened we went into recovery. I woke up, and I saw my sister.... and I had this tube down my throa,t and that is when they told me I had ileostomy to prepare me for that because it would have involved a bag on your side. I went, "Oohh that's not good." But I couldn’t talk, so I just started crying. And she said, well not to cry, not to cry at all; it will only be temporary until we get the chemotherapy done. Well, of course, me being me, it’s not anything this typical. I decided my body was going to get nice infections. It set me back six weeks in the hospital trying to get rid of the infections, trying to keep the blood transfusions going, and the Albumin was dropping like a rock even though I wasn’t getting any more drainage. So my little 7-10 day excursion turned into 6 weeks in Baltimore, and it was devastating to me. At the end of the 6 weeks, they told me that I was pretty decent. My levels were up, and the infection was gone after 6 rounds of antibiotics. So, they said, "We are going to let you go home, but you are still not out of the waters." So my sister met me at the airport, and I drove in. It takes an hour to get to the airport in Washington, so I drove with, or I should say I was picked up by a cab, and we rode to Washington to get to the plane, and she was there and met me.... and we came home.
