Video Transcript: Why Should I Get a Mesothelioma Lawyer?

You know patients ask me all the time, "Should I get a lawyer? I don’t want to sue; I want to concentrate on my illness; what do I do?" And my advice to the patients is to get a lawyer. And the reason I feel that it’s important to have an attorney for this are manifold.  The disease is an expensive disease to treat. If you live in some little tiny town and the specialist is miles and miles away, you have the transportation costs. I have a patient who was diagnosed in Minnesota.  For that patient we calculated together to treat this disease that the patient made 50 trips back and forth to New York City. You have to calculate the airfare, the hotels, the meals away from home, caring for animals at home if you have to put them in a shelter or whatever it is that you may need to do. It’s an expensive disease to treat. A lawsuit does not bring back your loved one, or it certainly doesn’t take away what is happening with the disease. But, it allows you that flexibility that you can take this money and you can pay for any treatment that your insurance company may not cover. So many of my patients who have settlements have said to me, "That is my bankroll." That is to make sure that whatever it is I need, I can afford to do... to take care of myself. And also if it strikes in the prime of your life, you have a family that you have to provide for.  So, I think it is important to have a lawyer. Again, there are so many instances with insurance companies where they are denying treatments. They don’t want to allow you access to a specialist. I tell my patients all the time, "Pick up the phone and call your lawyer. Ask them to intervene." Nothing better than a phone call or a letter from a lawyer that is going to open up the doors and allow you to get permission from your insurance company to seek the care that you need to seek.
