Video Transcript: Mesothelioma Asbestos Cancer: An Overview

What is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a rare asbestos cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.  Mesothelioma forms in the mesothelium, the thin membrane that surrounds and protects vital organs throughout the body. Mesothelioma most commonly attacks the lungs, chest and abdomen.

Each year, nearly 3,000 people in the United States alone are diagnosed with mesothelioma, as opposed to lung cancer, where there are approximately 173,700 new cases yearly. Nearly all cases are linked to direct or indirect exposure to asbestos.

Mesothelioma is particularly dangerous because it has a very long latency period, meaning it can take anywhere from 10 to 60 years after exposure to asbestos for the cancer and its symptoms to become evident, further complicating the diagnosis. Unfortunately, once symptoms do appear, the disease progresses quickly.

The most commonly found forms of mesothelioma occur in the pleura --or lungs--and the peritoneum--the abdomen. Other rare forms can occur in the pericardial sac--or heart, and the testes and scrotum.

Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the lungs. This is the most common form of mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the lining around organs in the abdomen.
