Video Transcript: Lung Removal (Pneumonectomy) to Fight Pleural Mesothelioma Diagnosis
We went back to Boston for the surgery. All of my children went with us and a group of people from our church, family; there were a lot of people that actually went back to Boston with us for the surgery. It was good for the support, but I still felt alone. I felt like no one really understood what was happening. I felt as though I could have a husband in three hours to be with me, or I could not. Before Andrew went into surgery he talked to my boys. He didn’t want me in the room; he wanted to talk to my boys. My daughter was just a wreck, totally. We went in together and she wouldn’t even let him go when the doctors came. It was really hard at that time, but Andrew went ahead and had the surgery done. He had his left lung removed. He came out of the surgery. Dr. Sugarbaker said that he did excellent, being that he was a young man and he had good body structure.... that he did very, very well. When I went to the room to see him in recovery I had to take a step back when I got to the door. It was something that I had never ever in my life experienced. There were a million machines around him. I knew it was him, but that was it. It was really, really bad by looking at it. My daughter, my kids could not handle it at all.
