Learn about mesothelioma treatment options

Mesothelioma treatment typically involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. However, the choice of a mesothelioma treatment path is dependent upon the type of mesothelioma, the staging of the disease, and the health of the individual. Surgery by itself is not considered optimal and the practice of combining surgery with either chemotherapy, radiation, or both has gained acceptance as the preferred approach to treat mesothelioma. This combination of methods is called "multimodality treatment," and has shown the most progress of any approach.

Other methods of treatment include draining excess fluid from the chest or abdomen for relief. There are both curative and palliative surgeries for the different kinds and stages of mesothelioma, including removal of the tumor, the pleura (lung lining) or lungs and diaphragm themselves. Clinical trials are available for those who volunteer for treatments linked to state-of-the-art research. Some people seek out complementary of alternative treatments. One of the newer categories of mesothelioma treatment takes a biological approach, where the body’s own immune system is used against tumors by stimulating biological response modifiers in a systematic way.
