Pleural Mesothelioma

This type of mesothelioma is found on the lining of the lungs and diaphragm in the chest. The lungs are contained in a sac (the “pleura”) and protected by a thin membrane called the “mesothelium,” which creates fluid that enables the lungs to move. Pleural mesothelioma develops as a result of prolonged exposure to asbestos, the fibers of which become inhaled as loose airborne particles. These particles settle in and around the lungs when inhaled.

Listen to Mary Hesdorffer, a nurse practitioner  and medical liaison for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, explain pleural mesothelioma.
