Chemotherapy

Also called “chemo” for short. This therapy involves the prevention or treatment of disease (as cancer) by the administration of chemical agents. Chemotherapy--along with surgery, radiation therapy, and thoracentesis (or a combination of these)--is used to combat the symptoms of malignant mesothelioma. According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, “Most [chemotherapy] drugs used to treat mesothelioma are intravenous (given by injection into a vein).” Another approach is to use intracavitary chemotherapy, or the placement of drugs directly into the chest or abdomen.” This usually occurs in stage II or stage III mesothelioma.
