Whilst one of the various forms of mesothelioma will be the endpoint of exposure for many people, is there a timetable for the progression of the disease from initial diagnois with asbestosis (i.e. progressive lung scarring) to malignant cancer?

More great work from the Meso Foundation...from their website...

The Meso Foundation is hosting a press conference with leadership, members of Congress and three guest speakers who will share their poignant stories of loss due to mesothelioma. The press conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill on the first day of the three-day 5th Annual International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma, sponsored by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation), an event that offers information, support and awareness to help insure the banning of asbestos and increased dollars for meso research.

The three guest speakers are: 12 year old, Lexi Miletto, whose grandfather died of meso in 2005; Taylor Stoeckler, 15 years old, whose father succumbed to meso in 2007, five years after diagnosis; and, Julie Gundlach, a 35 year old mother who has been diagnosed with meso. Their presence at the press conference is meant to emphasize the urgency and importance of the House passing the legislation to ban asbestos and to increase funding for meso research.

With a latency period of 10-50 years, and with millions of Americans at risk for mesothelioma, an asbestos-generated cancer, the ravages of this life ending disease continue to disrupt families and lives.

Loss of a Parent:

“I know cancers of all kinds affect a lot of families, but with mesothelioma, we can do something about it,” explained Taylor Stoeckler. “Until all asbestos is banned and a cure for the disease is found, there will be more children like me without a parent. I love my dad so much… my life won’t ever be the same since he is gone forever from my mom and me.”

Loss of a Grandfather:

I have written to anyone who would listen to me and I plead today to our senators and Congressmen to pass a complete ban on asbestos use in the United States and earmark more funds for mesothelioma research,” expressed Lexi Miletto. “I want to tell them: Please don’t let this disease steal another loved one like my PopPop!”

Loss of the rest of Life:

“I can't even communicate how it feels to be told at the age of 35 to ‘put your affairs in order’,” said Julie Gundlach. “To have my ability to have children taken from me…to be told I won’t watch my child grow up. Dealing with the physical and emotional impact of this disease is hard enough without the knowledge that this disease was caused by asbestos exposure, and our government still will do nothing about preventing it from happening to others, like my daughter. Someone, somewhere, debated which was worth more – my life, or the profits from asbestos. And asbestos won.”

Asbestos is a known carcinogen, to which millions of Americans are unwittingly exposed each year. The damaging effects of asbestos do not manifest until decades after exposure – most often occurring as malignant mesothelioma. In the past eight years since the Meso Foundation has begun working on getting legislation passed, each year 3000 people have died of meso and tens of thousands have been exposed to asbestos.

“The impact of mesothelioma is about the people – the young children, teenagers, parents and grandparents who fall prey to the disease one way or another,” said Chris Hahn, Executive Director of the Meso Foundation. “Being diagnosed oneself or watching a loved one die from meso is a tragedy, and a travesty, that has become intergenerational. This press conference highlights the continued tragedy of meso and the desperate need for more research funding to help all those affected by this disease.”
